Today is the opening day of baseball so I thought I would amuse you with a quote from the best baseball movie of all time, Field of Dreams.  (I know some may disagree)

This year marks the 100th year since the Cubs won the World Series, so I think we can say with confidence, “This is our year.”  Well hope you enjoy the season and good luck in your fantasy leagues.

Terence Mann (James Earl Jones): Ray, people will come Ray. They’ll come to Iowa for reasons they can’t even fathom…  The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball. America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time. This field, this game: it’s a part of our past, Ray. It reminds of us of all that once was good and it could be again. Oh… people will come Ray. People will most definitely come.

As you read it do you find yourself trying to do your best James Earl Jones voice.

Have good week

Matt

Welcome!

March 27, 2008

Thanks to my recent discovery of facebook many of you are new to my blog site, therefore, I wanted to take a minute to tell you what it is all about.

This blog acknowledges that I’m not nearly as creative as I would like.  It also acknowledges that there is some great stuff out there we need to consider.  Sure I may write a personal note here and there, but the idea is to share the thoughts and ideas of others.  To be honest I just felt we would all get more out of that.

Thanks for you time I hope you will be challenged, humored, or both by visiting the site.  Check back often.

A while back my friend Josh had a great post challenging pastors to articulate well.  He gave us numerous reasons to consider the challenge, but I would like to add one more– you don’t end up doing this.

I just finished a review of John Piper’s book Let the Nations Be Glad.  You don’t have to look far in this book for a great quote, today’s quote comes from the first paragraph of the first chapter.

”Missions is not the ultimate goal of the church. Worship is.  Missions exist because worship doesn’t. Worship is ultimate, not missions, because God is ultimate, not man.”

 he continues to say

“But worship is also the fuel of missions.  Passion for God in worship precedes the offer of God in preaching.”

There are many other quotes we could consider, but it would be easier and more beneficial for you to just read the book.   Matt

The Madness — less than 24 hours

March 19, 2008

I said yesterday these post would be great moments from tournament history, but today’s clip is subject to your allegiance.

Let the Madness Begin

March 18, 2008

On thursday afternoon at about 12:15 EST my favorite three weeks of the year will begin.  It all starts with the best two days in sports, in which we have the opportunity to watch 32 basketball games.  Of course before all that we have to stare at a bracket for hours trying find those upsets that will have everyone talking.  I personally pick most of them so when it does happen I can brag, “I had that on my sheet.”

This week I will do my best to provide us with some of the greatest moments of tournament.  I hope you enjoy them and block out some time, a lot of time, to enjoy basketball this weekend.

I have been doing a new series with my students entitled Worldwide: Understanding the Great Commission.  As we have studied together I was reminded of the story of Jim Elliot.  If you have some time to pick up End of the Spear, either in book or movie form.  Here are some of my favorite Jim Elliot quotes:

-I no longer depend on pleasant impulses to bring me before the Lord. I must rather respond to principles I know to be right, whether I feel them to be enjoyable or not.

-He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.

-Wherever you are – be all there.

I hope these challenges you like they have challenged me today, especially the last one.
