Vacation

September 29, 2007

This week I have been away on vacation.  Sorry for the failure to post a Monday quote, but I may provide you all with a couple after the week of reading I have had.  My wife has begun year round school and this is the end of her first track out.  Since the summer church stuff has calmed down we got a chance to get away.

After much discussion we decided to drive down to Orlando, FL.  In the fall you can stay VERY cheap.  After sitting through a two hour time-share presentation we were able to hit a couple of amusement parks.  After a week on vacation I have a couple of notes:

1.)  People come from all over the world to experience Orlando.  I met people from Ireland, Australia, Scotland, UK, Venezuela, Japan, and Mexico.

2.)  Discussing family life is a great way to have Gospel discussion.  I haven’t used this approach nearly enough.  Looking at my evangelistic methods I they seem to rigid looking to present the Gospel without listening or sometimes neglecting to love or serve the one whom I am sharing with.

3.)  The desperation of our world for the Gospel.  I know you might be thinking, “You had to go to Orlando to learn about the sinfulness of man?”  Sometimes I’m guilty of living in my bubble and not seeking new ways to share Christ.  How can I be more effective in my witness?

4.)  Finally, I have learned the importance of vacation.  In the past I have neglected to see the importance spending time alone with my wife.  It doesn’t have to be to Florida every year, despite what the time-share people say, but I need to carve out time.  This is the first vacation my wife and I have gone on since our honeymoon.  Sure we make a trip to Indiana every now and then, but our vacations are rare.  When was the last time you got away with the purpose of spending time with your family?

I hope everyone is doing well.

Monday Quote (Late Once Again)

September 18, 2007

Well I was going to skip the Monday quote this week until I visited my friend Josh’s blog, and saw a reference to to the Monday quote.  In light all that here is today’s quote.

Today’s quote doesn’t come from a good book, altough it seems I am reading more than my share these days with seminary.  Instead, today’s quote comes from a song.  I don’t know if any of you have ever listened to any Ross King, but  I was introduced to Mr. King about four years ago through his song “Clear the Stage.”

“shine a light on every corner of your life until the pride and lust and lies are in the open”

“anything I put before my God is an idol, anything I want with all my heart is an idol, anything I can’t stop thinking of is an idol, anything that I give all my love is an idol, we must not worship something that is not even worth it.”

If you haven’t heard this song before, I challenge you to google it,  stop what you are doing for 5 minutes and 49 seconds, and allow God to use the words of this song to challenge you.

Have a good week.

Monday Quote on Tuesday

September 11, 2007

I would like to begin this blog with a prayer request.  On Saturday morning it was confirmed that one of my teenagers, Timmy Baker, has Leukemia.  The doctors are very positive at this point, but please pray for Timmy, his family, and others involved.  I know that God wants to use this event in our lives. I will leave the comments brief, but please pray.

Well I have been kind of slack with the Monday quote and for that I apologize.  I know that the 4 people that read this blog might be wondering if I’m okay.

Today’s quote comes from JC Ryle.  I was introduced to Ryle in an ethics class and have been challenged by his writings.  Today’s quote comes from a book called Holiness, and I highly recommend it.  It was first published in 1877, but almost seems like it was written yesterday.  I believe books of truth have that appeal.  In the first chapter entitled “Sin”  he makes this statement:

“And man, fallen man, I believe, can have no just idea what a vile thing sin is in the sight of the God whose handiwork is absolutely perfect–perfect whether we look through telescope or a microscope; perfect in the formation of a mighty planet like Jupiter, with his satellites, keeping time to a second as he rolls round the sun; perfect in the formation of the smalles insect that crawls over the foot of ground.”

Friends we must teach, preach, and understand  the seriousness of our sin.
