Monday Quote

August 27, 2007

With the college football season around the corner I thought I would bring a favorite quote from one of my favorite coaches.  Lou Holtz coached many years at Notre Dame and was always a popular motivational speaker around the country.  He is a great story teller and has an ability to captivate the attention of an audience.

I am not sure what Lou believes about God, but this simple quote challenges me.  “I can’t believe God put us on this earth to be ordinary.”  Based on Romans 12:1-2 I agree with Coach.  We are not to conform to the “ordinary” patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of our mind.

In what ways do we conform to the ordinary?   In what areas do I justify my sinful behavior because it is ordinary?  Why do I view ministry as ordinary work at times?

I pray you do not have an ordinary week and seek to do extraordinary things for the glory of God.

Monday Quote

August 20, 2007

This last week I began working with a couple who is experiencing some difficulties in their marriage.  We will begin our second week today and I am excited to see the work God is doing in this marriage.

One of the homework assignments I gave them was to read Chapter eight in Gary Thomas’ book “Sacred Marriage.”  Within this chapter Gary uses a quote from John Climacus, author from the 5th Century.  Climacus addresses our demand for easy when he says, “I would not consider any spirituality worthwhile that wants to walk in sweetness and ease and run from the imitation of Christ.”

God used those words to challenge me in great ways this week.  How many times do I run from opportunities to that might mold me into becoming more like Christ, because I prefer my own comfort.

Have a great week.

I have decided that I would like to add a new quote to my blog each week.  In keeping with my title I thought it would be appropriate.  I will try to bring various minds to the table each week and welcome any feedback or comments.

“This year, or this month, or, more likely, this very day, we have failed to practise ourselves the kind of behaviour we expect from other people.”

CS Lewis, The Case for Christianity

Hope you all have a great week.
